Why Internships?

If there's one thing we know about this field of dietetics, it's that so few people understand what is required to become a Registered Dietitian. Ok... we know more than that about our field but still! There is definitely an inherent lack of information or common knowledge about what a dietitian is and how they got there. First and foremost, an RD (registered dietitian) is NOT the same as a nutritionist, a certified nutritionist, or any other variation.

The following is required for a person to become an RD:

  1. B.S. degree in Dietetics
  2. 2. Accredited Dietetic Internship (DI)
  3. 3. Pass the RD Exam
  4. 4. In some states: Licensure
It looks pretty simple when it's written out in 3-4 steps but you're actually looking at years of dedication, education, application, competition, etc. The internship programs are highly competitive and impacted and the application process itself is rigorous at best. Most internships have acceptance rates around 10%-15% while some are as low as 4-5%.
Each applicant is ranked on their GPA, work experience, volunteer experience, personal statements, multiple references, interview and probably other stuff they don't even tell you like... your facebook account or pinterest boards. :)

Anyway, it's very difficult to get in so we feel pretty excited, lucky, and blessed. And how awesome is it that we all three got in the same year? I'm pretty sure that's nearly impossible odds!

I hope that through this blog of ours we can shed a little light on the road to becoming an RD. If not, well we plan on having fun writing it anyway. If there happens to be a question on your mind, leave us a comment! If you'd rather find out on your own....

here's a very vague description of the profession from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

I'm sure you could also Google it and find a plethora of misleading or contradicting results. :)
